That will indeed remain unchallenged, but the fact that what you get even then goes quite a bit beyond what is usual in this price range ought to be added. Aavik claims that they are very similar, but where they differ is the amount of built-in Ansuz noise-canceling technology. I’ve been told that Michael Børresen, who is in charge of design and development at Aavik, has started an “all-out war on noise”. Every one of his products does something to minimize noise whether it’s mechanical or electrical. The difference between the 180 to the 280 series is that the 280 gets more Tesla coils and as a result, there is more of Ansuz noise-canceling technology. The 580 series adds a copper chassis and some other premiums, but the heart of the product remains the same. This makes the 180 series an incredible value…. I highly recommend any of these three Aavik components. The cabinet of the Aavik 880 amplifier was designed primarily with the goal of maintaining the best audio characteristics of the electrical design, i.e. the lowest inductance, reducing hysteresis to an absolute minimum, and ensuring excellent resonance control. In addition, since this was a Class A amplifier that was to be developed, there were some predefined premises for the design. The one specific resonance that creates an unpleasant and disturbing sound is a pressure resonance resulting from the given size of the room – subjectively, it feels like a “boom” emanating from the speakers. To eliminate this room specific resonance, the Aavik amplifiers can adapt their audio performance and make allowances for any given room size.
